As Brian blinked awake, he watched the movie credits roll. He started to sit up but then heard the sound of Emmaline softly snoring next to him. Her arm was draped across his waist as she slept peacefully on his chest. He felt like he never wanted to move again and disturb her.

She must have sensed a change in him, because she suddenly startled awake, wiping a hand across her chin.

“You snore and drool,” he told her, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “It’s adorable.”

She rolled her eyes. “It’s rude of you to point that out,” she grumbled.

He leaned in and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “But I said it was adorable.”

“Still rude.”

“I talk in my sleep,” he offered. “Does that make you feel better?”

“Actually it does a little.” She shifted closer. “Thank you,” she said against his mouth.

He hoped she didn’t expect him to resist her being so close. There was no possible way that could happen. He cupped her face between his hands and kissed her. He savored her sweet taste, and his body seemed to ignite when a soft moan escaped her lips.

He deepened the kiss. She opened for him without question and within moments he was lost in the taste and feel of her.

He jerked away before he completely lost control. “I should go. I don’t want to go,” he clarified, “but I should go.”

“You don’t have to go,” she told him. She bit down on her lower lip, and he nearly groaned. “You could stay the night. I don’t mean that... I don’t think I’m ready... I guess I just mean you could sleep here.” She covered her eyes with her hand. “That sounds so stupid. I know we’re adults. There’s nothing stopping us from—”

“I’d love to stay.” He interlaced their fingers. “Nothing needs to happen, Em. I wasn’t joking when I said I don’t mind taking things slow. The idea of holding you all night is the best thing I’ve ever heard.”

She stood and tugged him to follow her. “Best thing I’ve heard, too,” she said as she led him to her bedroom. Her bed had about a dozen pillows and a soft white comforter covering it. It looked infinitely appealing.

“I’m going to, um, brush my teeth and put on my pajamas and...” She looked down at the floor.

“Emmaline, if this is too much, I don’t have to stay.”

“I want you to,” she said without hesitation. “I also don’t want you to end up disappointed because this isn’t the kind of night you’re used to or I can’t give you what you expect.”

“I don’t expect anything,” he told her honestly. “I can just hold you.” That answer seemed to satisfy her, and her shoulders, which she’d held rigid, relaxed slightly.

“Then, I’ll be right back.”

She disappeared out of the room, and Brian pressed the heels of his hands to his forehead. Do not mess this up, he inwardly commanded. Remember that it’s temporary. Remember that it’s casual.

His heart wasn’t paying a damn bit of attention to his head.
